Enforcement time set for smokefree legislation in N.I

21 March 2007

Making the announcement, Mr Goggins said; "I am conscious that there will be some premises operating both before and after midnight on 29/30 April. I want to simplify compliance in these circumstances and it is for this reason that I have decided that enforcement should begin at 6.00am on 30 April.

"There has been overwhelming support for the introduction of smoke-free legislation in Northern Ireland. I am sure that, with the co-operation of employers and the general public, 30 April will herald the beginning of an important era in the protection of public health."
