German Chancellor pushes for smoking ban in Talks With States

13 December 2006

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has attempted to persuade regional leaders to introduce smokefree legislation in restaurants, schools and other public places, after being forced to drop plans for a nationwide ban.

This follows the news that the Cabinet has only approved a smoking ban for federal-government buildings such as ministries, train stations and job centres, even though lawmakers previously agreed on the terms for a broader ban. The country's 16 states will be left to draw up their own rules for restaurants, pubs and schools, as government legal experts consider that a nationwide ban may be unconstitutional.
