Hong Kong started the New Year by introducing smokefree legislation in most public places. The legislation, which came into effect on 1 January, covers most public areas, and also extends to some outside areas, such as those with swimming pools, beaches and public parks.
However, massage houses, mah jong parlours and nightclubs, have secured an eighteen month exemption and have until 1 July 2009 to comply.
