Smokefree legislation in Wales works well

10 April 2007

Publicans and bar owners across Wales yesterday branded the introduction of the week-old smokefree legislation as "smoother than expected".

Businesses claimed that since the new law was introduced, pubs had actually been busier than ever, with the good whether and bank holiday helping to make the transition a smooth one.

Ben Cottam, of the Federation of Small Businesses, said, "We are keeping an eye on it. When and if there are issues regarding enforcement, we will
be calling on the police to show lenience in the early stages. We hope they will allow businesses to comply rather than use enforcement.
