Smokefree legislation motivates Quebecers to quit

22 January 2007

A Quebec law making it illegal to smoke in bars and restaurants has motivated hundreds of thousands of Quebecers to kick the habit.

About 695,000 Quebecers have tried to quit smoking since the tough new anti-smoking law went into effect on May 31, 2006, according to a study made public yesterday. The study by Quebec's Health and Finance Departments also found that of those smokers, 230,000 managed to quit in the six months after the law's introduction.
