Smokefree legislation will be good for business

16 April 2007

An Ulster cafe chain, which went smokefree a year ago, has announced sales are up. The Streat franchise of cafes, which operates all over Northern Ireland said its decision to stamp out smoking in all of its premises has had a positive impact on businesses.

Streat managing director Michael McQuillan said the number of families bringing in custom has increased and other customers reported smoking less
as a result.

"I absolutely agree with the smoking ban and can state from experience that it has a positive impact on business," the businessman said.

"Feedback from Streat customers, and indeed the franchisees, has been very positive. Some smokers now have their smoke on the way from the office and still come for their morning coffee. Many say they are smoking less as a result - and get the kick they need from our coffee instead."

The new legislation will be introduced across Northern Ireland on 30 April. It will affect businesses including factories, offices, bars and restaurants, as well as work vehicles and public transport.
